MOMBC HISTORY

Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church has been standing strong since 1868, and our story is one of faith, resilience, and God’s unfailing hand. Founded by Rev. Alex Anderson, Mount Olive began humbly with a brush arbor and a small but determined group of believers. What started as a vision rooted in faith has grown into a multigenerational church family—so much so that six generations of Rev. Anderson’s descendants remain active members today. That kind of legacy doesn’t happen by accident.

Over the decades, Mount Olive was shepherded by faithful pastors who built not only structures, but people. From worshiping under trees to constructing the first church building by hand, the congregation pressed forward through growth, setbacks, and even tragedy—including a devastating fire in 1963 that destroyed the church during Sunday morning worship. Yet even then, the church didn’t stop being the church. Services continued in school cafeterias, basements, and anywhere God’s people could gather—until the doors of the current sanctuary opened in 1964 to great rejoicing.

As the years progressed, Mount Olive expanded its ministries, facilities, and community impact. Under the long and faithful leadership of Rev. Max B. McIlwain, the church became debt-free, added educational space, launched outreach initiatives, and strengthened its commitment to spiritual education. Later, Rev. Byron Davis carried the torch forward, bringing renewed energy, developing leaders, launching ministries like Children’s Church and Food Bank outreach, and deepening Mount Olive’s identity as a church built on family and service.

In 2018, Mount Olive joyfully welcomed its 11th pastor, Rev. Frederick H. Mills, ushering in a season of vision, growth, and connection. Through seasons of challenge—including the COVID-19 pandemic—Mount Olive remained mission-focused, expanding outreach, embracing virtual ministry, and continuing to serve the community. Today, Mount Olive stands as a living testimony of God’s faithfulness for over 150 years, moving forward with purpose, compassion, and a clear vision for the next generation.
